[DISCLAIMER: SPOILERS AHEAD!]
“Big Issue” focuses its cameras on paparazzi, who are usually the ones behind the cameras.
Ji Soo-Hyun (Han Ye-Seul) is a calm and composed character, but Han Seok-Joo (Joo Jin-Mo) has left her shocked time and time again. Anyone would be in her shoes, because you don’t see people risking their lives by jumping off a moving train on a daily basis.
It all began with Ji Soo-Hyun striking a deal with Han Seok-Joo. She needed to get that scoop of a celebrity gambling, and in return, she agrees to help Seok-Joo find his daughter.
Seok-Joo used to be a famous paparazzi photographer who had exposed famous people in the past, but he burned his fingers because of one news story he had worked on. That made him lose everything dear to him and he’s now living life as a homeless ex-convict.
With nothing left to his name, Seok-Joo has nothing to lose. If all he needs is to find his daughter, he would do whatever it takes to get that done. That includes hanging off the train to take pictures of a celebrity gambling.
However, he may have gone overboard with his fearlessness. The calm and collected Soo-Hyun jumped and stared with her eyes wide opened when she saw him hanging on the train. The celebrity’s employee, who is supposedly an antagonist, was only trying to get hold of Seok-Joo’s camera, but he ended up begging Seok-Joo to live while holding onto Seok-Joo’s scarf, preventing him from falling off the train moving on full speed.
The leads’ pasts are revealed rather quickly. Soo-Hyun wasn’t doing too well as a journalist. She gets ridiculed for getting scoops in bed and is on the verge of getting fired.
Both leads got themselves entangled in the same news story, where one exposes the misdeeds of a celebrity doctor and loses his job in the end, while the other gets her hands dirty by trying to recover the doctor’s reputation in order to climb up the career ladder.
Seok-Joo’s escape game doesn’t just end with falling off the train, the celebrity’s employees went to the hospital he’s in to get the pictures he had taken. And even in here, his fearlessness doesn’t disappoint. He steps on the ground covered in acidic chemicals and broken pieces of glass without shoes to run away from the people after him.
This is also the only time where Soo-Hyun gets the opportunity to show that shrewd and composed side of her. Realizing that she couldn’t send people to reach the hospital in time to help Seok-Joo, Soo-Hyun quickly tells her secretary to make a police report, and have police officers reach the scene first.
Did Seok-Joo manage to give her the photos in the end? Yes, but not in the most pleasant way you would find—he ripped his wound on his thigh apart and dug out the memory card which contains the photos he had taken.
BONUS: Number of times Seok-Joo’s recklessness has left people stunned (From episodes 1 to 4)
Soo-Hyun witnessing Seok-Joo falling off the train.
COUNTER: 1
Seok-Joo stepping on the acidic floor with broken pieces of glass, leaving the celebrity’s employees stunned.
COUNTER: 2
Soo-Hyun and her employees shocked to see Seok-Joo digging a memory card out from his wound.
COUNTER: 3
Ratings: 6.5/10
The first four episodes (30 minutes each) are filled with Seok-Joo risking his life and running away from someone. These are obvious plot devices to get viewers thrilled, but nevertheless, it can still be exciting to watch as of now.
