SBS’ newest drama “Secret Boutique” just began airing last week and is already off to a positive start! The first episode of “Secret Boutique” which aired on September 18 hit 3.8% and 4.6% percent, surpassing its predecessor, “Doctor Detective,” which wrapped up with 3.9% percent on September 5.
The thriller drama stars Kim Sun-A, Jang Mi-Hee, Park Hee-Von, Go Min-Si, Kim Jae-Young, and Kim Tae-Hoon. The story revolves around an extremely intelligent female lead, Jenny Jang (Kim Sun-A/Jung Da-Eun), who used to live and work in a public bathhouse when she was younger. When Kim Yeo-Ok (Jang Mi-Hee) saw how capable Jenny Jang was, she took her in, thinking she would be of great help in expanding her family business. But will she really?
The main tension of the drama is the power struggle between two characters, Jenny Jang and Wi Ye-Nam (Park Hee-Von), the oldest daughter of the Deo family.
Jenny Jang seems to be leading so far in this fight. She knows exactly when and what to do, and is always ahead of her rivals. Powerful people also lean toward Jenny Jang whenever they need someone to clean up their mess. And in turn, Jenny Jang uses them as chess pieces to continue climbing up her ladder for more power.
But is Jenny Jang a righteous person? Or is she capable of doing everything just for power? Surprisingly, Jenny Jang shows her humane side by punishing a man responsible for domestic violence when he was the one who requested for help. That leaves an interesting question, is Jenny Jang trying to gain more power to make everything that has gone wrong, right?
As more characters come into the story, not only the power struggle becomes more intense, Jenny Jang also attracts more people to her side. From the beginning, she already has Yoon Sun-Woo (Kim Jae-Young) as her loyal right-hand man.
He could dig up information, fight, and he basically does everything with her. If you don’t see them together, Sun-Woo is probably going to be on the phone with her! Sun-Woo does whatever she says, but shows slight unhappiness when she is about to get married–that explains why he’s so loyal.
The amateur Go player, Lee Hyun-Ji (Go Min-Si), also found her way to Jenny Jang after her mother, Park Joo-Hyun (Jang Young-Nam) went missing. Hyun-Ji couldn’t get help from the police or prosecutor as they were all in cahoots. Later, she found Jenny Jang as her only hope, realizing that the people against her are the same people Jenny Jang is going against.
Hyun-Ji’s years of experience playing Go could help her tell if someone is lying by reading body languages and facial expressions. An extremely useful person to Jenny Jang, since mind games cannot be avoided!
And well, powerful people go to her whenever they are forced to take sides because they know how capable she is.
“Secret Boutique” is extremely fast-paced and it leaves no time to be bored! Even the occasional flashbacks in the drama are used to create surprising twists and they give more meaning to each character’s actions. Additionally, Jenny Jang is also a strong female character that lets you watch satisfyingly because she almost always has the upper hand.
