It pains me to see well-made dramas suffer from low ratings, some of these aren’t too popular among international fans too.

Some of its reasons for not doing well despite its amazing script can be easily guessed, the leads aren’t popular enough, the plot sounds too predictable, the title or synopsis didn’t do its job well enough to captivate viewers’ hearts, etc.

Even so, it doesn’t mean that these dramas are any less amazing than they are. They certainly deserve more attention than they were given.

Children of Nobody

Release date: November 21, 2018 — January 16, 2019

Ratings: 2.9%-6.2%, average ratings 4.75%

Leads: Kim Sun-Ah, Lee Yi-Kyung, Nam Gyu-Ri, Cha Hak-Yeon.

I was ready to drop this series after watching the pilot episode. The first episode didn’t give me the slightest idea of what this series is about. The next one, however, begins piecing things up together. That made me happy that I didn’t actually drop this.

Children of Nobody” is a mystery series that keeps things thrilling till the end with its fast pacing. It breaks my heart to see vulnerable children being victims of child abuse, but fortunately, the leads are able to see through the lies of the adults and children (who lie to protect their parents) rather quickly, so we don’t have to watch these kids suffer for too long.

This series has also left meaningful messages to viewers. It reminds that these horrifying child abuse experiences stay with the children for the rest of their lives even after growing up.

Minor Flaw: The writer focuses on making things realistic. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it doesn’t feel too satisfying to watch knowing that the bad isn’t punished enough. On the good side, it gives a realistic view of how child abusers get away with the law.

Possible Reasons for its Low Popularity? Are the leads not well-known enough? Could it be that the story is too dark and heavy to attract viewers? Or perhaps, the pilot episode isn’t attractive enough?

Just Dance

Release date: December 3 — December 25, 2018

Ratings: 1.7%-4.0%, average ratings 2.28%

Leads: Kim Kap-Soo, Park Se-Wan, Jang Dong-Yoon.

Making a big change is a scary thing. Youths are forced to make life decisions at a young age. Some struggle between choosing what makes them happy and being content with staying within the small world that their circumstances have kept them in all their lives. And some avoid making decisions because they are terrified of change, knowing how unpredictable it can be.

Kim Shi-Eun (Park Se-Wan) is an eccentric girl. She lashes out at others without telling the real reason, makes use of her “friends” whom she doesn’t consider them to be, thinks she’s better than them because she’s smarter and has a bigger dream—going to Seoul to become a movie director.

We get to follow Shi-Eun through the series, from her learning that she isn’t really better than her “friends”, to becoming real friends with them (which warms up my heart) and realizing how getting her dream job may not guarantee happiness in life.

This heart-warming series has made me tear up several times watching Shi-Eun and her friends struggle with trying to find their place in the adult world.

Minor Flaw: With only 8 hours of runtime in total, the story may feel little rushed.

Favorite Quote: “The hope that is waving at us may be a mirage, but we must go to find out.” & “Doing what you want doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be happy.”

Possible Reasons for its Low Popularity? The plot sounds too simple and predictable? The title seems to be only about dance?

On a side note, “Children of Nobody” and “Just Dance” are available to watch on KOCOWA for free!

Do you have any other dramas in mind that don’t deserve their low ratings too?
