There are times when we are just looking to bawl our eyes out. Or perhaps, we take up the challenge to watch them, thinking our hearts are made of steel. If you’re like me, you would end up failing terribly most of the time but still thinking that it’s satisfying to watch, somehow. It could be because we’re releasing all those pent-up emotions, or that we just love sobbing away.
Whatever it is, these tear-inducing Korean dramas below are going to make sure they leave you emotionally broken before they end.
1. Should We Kiss First? (2018)
MAIN LEADS: Kam Woo-Sung, Kim Sun-A, Oh Ji-Ho.
PLOT: Son Moo-Han (Kam Woo-Sung) is a sharp-tongued man who works in an advertising company and An Soon-Jin (Kim Sun-A) is a veteran flight attendant who thinks that she will never find love. One is afraid of dying, and the other is afraid of being alone. The two meet and heal each other’s wounds.
WATCH THIS FOR: Its relatable dialogues and its usage of deep, meaningful poems in the drama. This middle-aged romance story also touches on the sensitive topic of death respectfully and movingly.
2. Marriage Contract (2016)
MAIN LEADS: Lee Seo-Jin, Uee, Shin Rin-Ah.
PLOT: Single mother Kang Hye-Soo (Uee) lives with only her daughter Cha Eun-Sung (Shin Rin-Ah). Her husband passed away years ago, leaving her with debt. After learning that she suffers from an incurable illness, she tries to find ways to raise money for her daughter. One day, she overhears that Han Ji-Hoon (Lee Seo-Jin)’s mother is in need of a liver donor.
WATCH THIS FOR: Kang Hye-Soo’s motherly love. Despite learning that she has an incurable illness, all she could think about was her daughter and what she could do just so her daughter can live without her. Her bouts of emotional breakdowns happen during her most pathetic and loneliest moments, making it really upsetting and heartbreaking to watch.
3. Kill Me, Heal Me (2015)
MAIN LEADS: Ji Sung, Hwang Jung-Eum, Park Seo-Joon.
PLOT: Cha Do-Hyun (Ji Sung) suffers from dissociative identity disorder (DID). He has 7 different personalities and they all have memories and emotions of their own. He hires Psychiatrist Oh Ri-Jin (Hwang Jung-Eum) to treat him secretly.
WATCH THIS FOR: Oh Ri-Jin treating all his 7 personalities as a person on their own. As a psychiatrist, treating Cha Do-Hyun’s disorder would mean getting rid of his 6 other personalities. That’s when Cha Do-Hyun and Oh Ri-Jin have to bid them farewell after they both have gotten really attached to these personalities, which were created for painful reasons. Bidding them farewell together with the leads aren’t going to be easy to do, especially when these personalities begin to question why they should go, and what happens when they disappear.
