After 3 weeks of hiatus, due to the Winter Olympics, “Through the Darkness” will return on the 25th with a stronger Part 2. For those of you who have blurred memories about Part 1, since it was a few weeks ago, to refresh your memories, here is a “Through the Darkness” summary!

The Korea’s very first Criminal Behavior Analysis Team

Song Ha Young (Kim Nam Gil) is a police officer who understands people very well. Feeling the need to analyze criminal behavior before anyone else, Gook Young Soo (Jin Seon Gyu), the chief of the inspection department, finds Song Ha Young’s strong potential as the right fit for the position. As Young Soo expected, Song Ha Young was able to find and arrest the murderer by using his natural and thorough behavior analysis.

With this opportunity, the two were able to form Korea’s first criminal behavior analysis team. On top of that, Jung Woo Joo (Ryeo Woon), a statistical analyst who is diligent and does everything he is told, joined as the youngest in the team. Despite the stinging gaze of the police, the three members firmly walked their path to read the minds of evil.

The use of profiling investigation techniques for identifying suspects

After the establishment of the criminal behavior analysis team, Song Ha Young and Gook Young Soo slowly build up data through interviewing with many criminals. Meanwhile, a gruesome Changi-dong case (a 5-year-old girl’s mutilated murder) occurrs. This brutal murder case was not easy to identify any suspects.

However, the criminal behavior analysis team identified the suspect using profiling techniques, and the investigation team was able to arrest the heinous murderer, Cho Hyun Gil. Cho Hyun Gil carried several characteristics that the criminal behavior analysis team inferred. It was the very first case, ever, where a criminal was arrested using profiling investigation techniques. And from here, the criminal behavior analysis team began to show a wider range of performances.

In the early 2000s, a psychopath serial killer appeared

There have been three murders that resulted in a total of 10 victims, which occurred in various parts of Seoul. The same patterns were detected in these case:  luxurious house, entering the homes disguised as a robber (instead of a murderer), the use of a specific blunt weapon, and the same hiking trail were found.

The criminal behavior analysis team intuitively sensed the emergence of a serial killer. In order to prevent the next murder, an unconventional decision was made to the public. Since then, the serial murder has stopped. But his traces also disappeared as well.

This is where we left off. Will the criminal behavior analysis team be able to capture the shadow of hidden evil again?

Stay tuned to KOCOWA for the next episode of “Through the Darkness” starting this Friday!
