Mother’s Day is just around the corner and we’ve all got our favorite K-Drama mama characters. Jang Na-Ra and Kim Mi-Kyung beautifully portrayed the complicated relationship between a daughter and her mother, respectively, in “Go Back Couple.” Park Joon Geum was the mother we all loved to hate in “Secret Garden,” where Hyun Bin s character was unable to defy her. And Kim Hee-Sun — who’s the mother of an 11-year-old girl in real life — played the part of a protective mom who would go to any lengths to protect her bullied daughter (Kim Yoo-Jung) in “Angry Mom.”
KOCOWA wanted to honor some of our favorite real-life moms who juggle their personal and private lives with aplomb.
Age: 38
Family life: Married to actor Lee Byung-Hun (“Mr. Sunshine,” the “G.I. Joe” film franchise), she is the mother of their five-year-old son, Joon-Ho.
K-Dramas: Her breakthrough role was in 2009’s “Boys Over Flowers.” Lee starred opposite Gong Yoo in “Big.” Other series include “Once Again,” “Fate and Fury,” “Come Back Alive” (which also starred Rain), “Cunning Single Lady” and “Midas.”
Age: 38
Family life: Married to banker Choi Joon-Hyuk (the grandson of fashion designer Lee Young-Hee), the couple have two sons (aged four and two years old).
K-Dramas: Her breakthrough roles were in the films “Il Mare” (which was remade into the Hollywood film “The Lake House,” starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock) and “My Sassy Girl.” But it was the K-Drama “My Love From the Star” that catapulted Jun and her co-star Kim Soo-Hyun to international fame. The pair had first acted together in the 2012 feature film “The Thieves.” After making a much ballyhooed cameo appearance in the second season of “Kingdom,” Jun is poised for her comeback.
Age: 40
Family life: Married to the idol-actor Rain, the couple have two daughters, who were born in 2017 and 2019. Her visuals have been a standard of beauty in South Korea for many years.
K-Dramas: Kim made her acting debut in the 2001 film “Last Present,” followed up with 2002’s SBS dramas “Let’s Go” and “Screen.” But it was 2003’s “Stairway to Heaven” that made her a household name. (Trivia: Her younger brother, Lee Wan, also had a part in that series.) In “The Gang Doctor,” Kim played a chaebol’s daughter who was placed in a medically-induced coma by her father’s enemies.
Age: 38
Family life: Married to hip-hop idol Tablo (of the group Epik High) since 2009, the pair are parents to their daughter Haru, who recently celebrated her 10th birthday.
K-Dramas: Formerly a teen model, Kang won international fame for her role in Park Chan-Wook’s critically-acclaimed 2003 film “Oldboy.” Her first K-Drama was 1998’s “Eun-Shil,” followed by “Jump” and “Nonstop 3.” She made a cameo appearance as herself in episodes 5 and 12 of the SBS series “On Air.” And she appeared with her family in the KBS2 reality series, “The Return of Superman.” Most recently, she had a starring role in “Jugglers,” which is set in the world of office workers.
Age: 38
Family life: Lee married Korean businessman Cho Seung-Hyun in 2017. The couple welcomed their son in 2018.
K-Dramas: Like Lee Min-Jung, Si-Young’s breakthrough role was in “Boys Over Flowers,” where she played a once-homely student who was bullied for having undergone plastic surgery. She followed that role up as the abused mistress of a married chaebol in “Loving You a Thousand Times.” Some of her other K-Dramas include “Liver or Die,” “Risky Romance,” “The Guardian,” “Golden Cross” and “Wild Romance.” Trivia: Lee is also an accomplished boxer — a sport she picked up in her 20s.
To all our readers who are moms, Happy Mother’s Day! We hope you have a very special day full of love, food … and K-Dramas!
