“Iron Family” Episodes 1 & 2 Recap:

  • Da Rim had a challenging upbringing, living with her two siblings, parents, and grandparents. Despite the hardships, she remained optimistic, often cheering up her mother when things were tough. She lost her father at a young age after he became ill and passed away, having failed his exam.
  • Da Rim was a bright and popular girl when little, especially known for her extraordinary eyesight. Her vision amazed everyone, and during an eye exam, the ophthalmologist told her she might be special.
  • As she grew older, Da Rim still had her unique eyesight, but things took a turn. She was diagnosed with a rare eye condition that could lead to blindness. The doctor told her she could be cured, but the treatment cost was enormous.
  • One day, while crossing the street, Da Rim encounters Kang Ju, the heir of a wealthy conglomerate. As they cross paths, Kang Ju hears her inner voice cursing him, though he doesn’t know it’s her. At the same time, Da Rim hears the sound of Kang Ju flicking his metal lighter, bringing back memories of their past.
  • In the past, Da Rim had asked Kang Ju to spend the night with her at a motel. Kang Ju was her first love, the only one who had been kind to her in school. She couldn’t remember his face well due to her eye condition, but she remembered his scent and the sound of his lighter. She confessed that, knowing her condition, she just wanted one night with a decent guy. Kang Ju, on the other hand, wanted more, even though he was enlisting in the military the next day.
  • Kang Ju asked Da Rim to save his number as “Traffic Light” because of where they met. She disliked the name, thinking it would remind her of him every time she crossed the street. Kang Ju promised to contact her from the military, but he never did.
  • Fast forward to the present: after hearing an inner voice cursing him, Kang Ju gets into a car accident. As he crashes, he catches a blurry glimpse of Da Rim. He is hospitalized, though not seriously injured. He becomes preoccupied with his metal lighter, which holds significant meaning to him.
  • Kang Ju is the heir to the Jiseung Group. After his mother remarried Ji Seung Don, Kang Ju became the talk of the town, but he didn’t care. He admired Seung Don and saw him as the perfect father figure he had always wanted. In Kang Ju’s eyes, his mother’s best decision was marrying Seung Don.
  • Da Rim’s mother, Bong Hee, discovers her daughter’s eyesight is deteriorating rapidly. Bong Hee also finds out that Da Rim is desparate for help, she secretly tries to borrow a large sum of money from a loan shark to cover her treatment.
  • Ji Yeon, Kang Ju’s mother, has always been wealthy thanks to her father, who made a fortune in the loan shark business. He left a significant amount of money in a safe for Ji Yeon and Kang Ju to use when needed. One day, Ji Yeon quickly withdraws cash from the safe to buy a building, and Bong Hee, who was delivering clothes for her, ends up giving her a ride with bags full of cash.
  • Still hospitalized, Kang Ju visits a nearby convenience store for some instant noodles. While eating, he notices a girl with a disability sitting down with a stack of lottery tickets. She eagerly scratches each one and brings them close to her eyes to read the numbers. At first, Kang Ju doesn’t care, but her actions remind him of Da Rim, the girl he spent the night with eight years ago.
  • Realizing it’s Da Rim, he calls her number to see if she still has his contact saved. When her phone rang, the caller ID still reads “Traffic Light.” As soon as Da Rim sees that it’s the guy who never kept the promise to call back, she mutters, “Why is this prick calling me?” At that moment, Kang Ju realizes the inner voice cursing him was Da Rim all along.
