For K-pop and K-drama fans, one of the saddest announcements to wake up to is news of a favorite celebrity enlisting in the military. In South Korea, all able-bodied men are required to serve by the age of 28, which means that those born in 1996 and 1997 are preparing for their enlistment soon. Although some athletes or artists with international achievements may receive exemptions, it’s quite rare for actors and idols.
NCT Jaehyun and Kim Woo Seok Announce Military Enlistment
Just this week, both NCT’s Jaehyun and Kim Woo Seok confirmed they are preparing for enlistment. Their agencies shared that the two applied to join the Army Band and were accepted by the Military Manpower Administration. This means that both are scheduled to begin their service as active-duty soldiers on November 4.
Jaehyun, one of today’s most beloved idols from NCT 127, is known for his angelic visuals, amazing vocals, and charming personality showcased in his group’s reality show “NCT Life in Gapyeong.” On the other hand, Kim Woo Seok, formerly a member of Up10tion and X1, has built a reputation as a successful soloist and actor, starring in shows like “Boys Mental Training Camp.“
Other Korean Celebrities Who Will Be Enlisting Soon
Lee Jae Wook
You might be confused to see Lee Jae Wook in this list as he is a 1998 liner but he shared in “The Seasons: Artist with Zico” that he plans to enlist in the military next year. Known as one of the top actors of his generation, Lee Jae Wook starred in the historical action film “The Battle of Jang Sa Ri” and became a household name with his lead role in a K-drama written by the famous Hong Sisters.
Rowoon
It’s not fun to see our beloved star, Rowoon, who is a 1996 liner and will have to enlist by next year. Rowoon started as a member of the K-pop group SF9, and appeared in supporting roles in dramas like “School 2017,” and “Where Stars Land.” He then became part of today’s leading young actors when he starred in “Extra-ordinary You,” where he played the charming Haru in a fantasy high school setting.
SEVENTEEN Hoshi, Wonwoo, Woozi
SEVENTEEN’s Hoshi, Wonwoo, and Woozi, all born in 1996, are set to enlist soon, so we should brace ourselves for their departure. Following Jeonghan’s recent enlistment, it will be a while before we see the group fully reunited. SEVENTEEN is known for their energetic performances, outstanding vocals, and unique charm, as seen in “Magic Hour, The Seventeen“. Beyond music, they’ve become variety show favorites thanks to their fun personalities, especially in “Nana Tour With Seventeen.”
Kim Young Dae
Since last year, Kim Young Dae announced to his fans that he plans to enlist in the military next year meaning we won’t see him for a while. As one of the rising actors, he’s captured attention with standout roles, including playing one of the twins in “The Penthouse,” where he made a name for himself. He also charmed audiences as the King in “The Forbidden Marriage.“
NCT Doyoung
Joining his fellow NCT member Jaehyun, Doyoung is also preparing for enlistment, as he was born in 1996. Known for his stunning visuals and vocal talent, Doyoung is a beloved member of NCT 127. He’s also gained recognition for his variety show appearances, including “Master in the House 2,” and as a host of events like the “2024 SBS Gayo Daejeon Summer.“
Kang Daniel
The charismatic soloist and former Wanna One member Kang Daniel is another 96-liner preparing for military service. Known for being an all-around star in singing, acting, and hosting, Kang Daniel has won hearts with his laid-back personality on shows like “It’s Dangerous Beyond The Blankets.” Recently, he also served as a host for the “2024 Idol Star Athletics Championships – Chuseok Special.“
It’s always hard to see our favorite stars enlist, knowing we won’t see them for the next two years. While we wait, we can still enjoy their past shows and performances all available on KOCOWA+ for streaming with multiple subtitles!
