[DISCLAIMER: SPOILERS AHEAD!!]

When you crave for some classic Korean dramas, “Princess Hours” is definitely one to consider watching. I remember watching this as a child and the interesting thing is, my views on certain characters have changed drastically after rewatching it. Also, I finally understood what some of its scenes really meant…

Shin Chae-Kyung (Yoon Eun-Hye)

Shin Chae-Kyung is portrayed to be a childish and innocent girl in the drama. But is she really that innocent? It does seem like her natural instincts are teaching her what she should know slowly.

“Keep going!” Chae-Kyung says. But the real question here is, how far…?

Crown Prince Lee Shin (Ju Ji-Hoon)

Crown Prince Lee Shin proposes to his girlfriend Min Hyo-Rin, she rejects him because she wants to work on her ballet career first. Lee Shin doesn’t try to hold her back.

After marrying Chae-Kyung, he finds ways to send her home and let her parents visit her whenever she misses home. And when he sees that Chae-Kyung doesn’t like being in the palace, he tells her to wait a few more years, “You’ll be free again.”

The crown prince used to have a cold and arrogant image when I first watched this, but Lee Shin has been only doing what others want and he refrains from letting others know what he truly wants (telling Chae-Kyung that he wants to be with her.)

Prince Lee Yul (Kim Jeong-Hun)

Prince Lee Yul was supposed to be someone kind and caring. He spends his time listening to Chae-Kyung’s worries patiently and gives her appropriate advice… was what I thought of him in the past.

Lee Yul stares at Chae-Kyung, he takes a moment before saying his next sentence softly, “You’re definitely not Shin’s type.” Later, as he becomes closer to Chae-Kyung, he smiles and tells her, “But Hyo-Rin is the one he really likes, he’ll never look at you that way.”

Lee Yul also says inappropriate things to a married woman.

Lee Yul could actually be the root of all misunderstandings between the main couple seeing how he’s been planting those negative thoughts in Chae-Kyung’s head from the beginning.

Min Hyo-Rin (Song Ji-Hyo)

Min Hyo-Rin says that they are too young to get married and she has a career to pursue. At 18, a proposal would be a little too early for some and that is understandable. She didn’t want to break up with him, all she wanted was to delay the wedding. But in the middle of it, Shin Chae-Kyung got in the way and all of a sudden, Lee Shin doesn’t love her anymore.

Hyo-Rin seemed to be the one coming in between them at first watch, but she’s just a girl trying hard to get the love of her life back—although some of her actions are questionable.

Queen Min (Yun Yoo-Sun)

Queen Min may be a little strict, she doesn’t like Lee Shin calling her “Mom” informally. She makes Chae-Kyung study a lot too. Perhaps part of my hatred towards studying went to her in the past (sorry!), which is why I used to dislike her.

But Queen Min is only trying to educate Chae-Kyung to help make her transition into a crown princess a seamless one. She does have a soft spot at times.

BONUS: Consummation scene?

Consummation is more than just lovers sleeping on the same bed… More than… just exercising.

Rewatching a drama lets one see something they don’t see before. Perhaps my views and perspectives on certain things have changed after some time, or I was able to notice little things that I couldn’t before through rewatching. And that is the beauty of rewatching a drama and what makes rewatching it fun!

“Princess Hours” has arrived on KOCOWA! Watch it here!

  1. vaishalisudhakar – India – Hi, I am writer of Miss Ambivert Blog.

Did Ji Hyo and Ji Hoon dated during this drama?

    • So I read your article and seems like you really know your drama, what do you think you’d be good for the romance, something I feel like, I need to see more.

      • If you really like romance drama, I definitely recommend you watching “Discovery of Love”. It is my all time favorite!
