Okay, so for anyone who has had enough holiday happiness and brotherly love to last through the winter months, do we have a show for you: “Through the Darkness.” And, spoiler alert, it probably has none of those things.

“Through the Darkness” is a historical thriller set during the heyday of serial killers in Korea (and maybe in the world?), back when the term profiler had yet to be coined, and psychopath was not common vernacular. But it is not a story of serial killers – it is the story of the birth of profilers who hunt serial killers.

Oh yes, this show is going to be scary, so be sure to have a blanket (or a cutie, hee hee) to cuddle up with while watching!

Kim Nam Gil plays Song Ha Young (Profiler)

In “Through the Darkness,” Kim Nam Gil plays Song Ha Young. A cold-blooded profiler with no emotion. At least, that’s what people think. Ha Young is actually filled with empathy for the victims of serial killers and has a unique gift to look deeply into another person’s mind and emotions.

Because he looks so deeply into others’ minds, his emotions are repressed and accumulate in his body, which makes him appear different, strange, perhaps cold, to other people.

His boss’s motto is: a good detective becomes a good profiler, and Ha Young fits that description to a tee. In fact, Ha Young’s boss believes Ha Young is the only person who can dive into a criminal’s mind, figure out what they are thinking, and mold himself to become them.

In this dangerous new world where serial killers are becoming as commonplace as chewing gum, Ha Young may be all that stands between a person’s life and death.

Jin Sun Gyu plays Kook Young Soo (Team Leader)

Ha Young’s boss is Kook Young Soo, a forward-thinking policeman who is not swayed by authority, formality, or class. He is the godfather of CSI in Korea and is popular with his colleagues because of it.

Early on, Young Soo realized the necessity of profiling for these specific serial killer investigations. After finding Ha Young, he makes the serial killer profiling team.

However, no one thought that a person like an unprovoked killer could exist in Korea and are not prepared for the onslaught of serial killers to come, which makes Young Soo’s team all the more important in solving these cases.

Kim So Jin plays Yoon Tae Goo (Police Team Leader)

In the male-dominated police world of the 20th century, everyone is confused to meet Tae Goo. However, everyone who knows her knows she is better than any male detective.

Tae Goo is no-nonsense, sharp, and rational. This personality drew her to the violence team. Though she appears too aggressive on-site, she is very charismatic and sharper than anyone else. During investigations, she collides with Ha Young often, but at the same time, she trusts him.

Ryeoun plays Jong Woo Joo (Statistician)

Jong Woo Joo is an office worker that gathers every single bit of information he can find about a case. He never complains and is quick with his job, which is why Young Soo adores him (so, hopefully, that means we will have lots of cute bonding scenes between them).

A fun thing to note about Woo Joo is that a simple observation he makes could end up being a big clue to solve a crime. So pay close attention to what comes out of Woo Joo’s mouth!

Brr, do you feel the chill with this thriller yet? Because I do. (Okay, yes, that was corny).

If you are looking for a nice love story, this ain’t it. But, if you are here for a “Silence of the Lambs” esque ride, then you have found the show for you!
