Exactly 5 years ago today, would you expect that Namkoong Min and Hwang Jung Eum would be part of a cute, quirky rom-com called, “The Undateables”. Especially because Namkoong Min is currently playing Jang Hyun in the epic historical K-Drama “My Dearest” where he plays, a character who falls deeply in love with a noble lady. On the other hand, Hwang Jung Eum is currently playing the role of a deliciously evil villain in “The Escape of the Seven,” which gives me chills even thinking about her character in the series!
Is This Series Underrated?
I wouldn’t think so because I enjoyed every single episode of this series, which has 32 episodes total of thirty minutes each. Looking back, compared to the usual 16-episode types of K-Drama, “The Undateables” 32 episodes each had so much laughter that, to me, made it feel so short. Namkoong Min and Hwang Jung Eum reunited in this drama after 7 years after appearing together in “Listen to My Heart”, back in 2011.
The Story and Cast
This is a comedic romance where the two opposite characters Hoon Nam, a non-believer in love, and Jeong Eum, a person who dreams of love but has become a reluctant singleton due to harsh realities, both try to help the single members of the ‘inability to love’ club, but they only ended up falling in love themselves.
Kang Hoon Nam (played by Namkoong Min)
He is a natural-born dating maestro who rejects being in love, falling in love, or anything that has to do with love. Also, he is the second son of DMJ Food, or rather, an extramarital child. When he was young, his birth mother left the household. As a result, He became a non-believer in love from a young age. The problem is, that he is born with a fatal charm that attracts people to him. He likes to maintain a suitable distance so that he doesn’t let anyone sway his emotions. And he hates that. However, he meets Jung Eum, the only woman with whom his enormous charisma does not seem to work. In that moment, he experiences the joys and sorrows of love he has never known before.
Yoo Jung Eum (played by Hwang Jung Eum)
She is an ‘all-in or nothing at all’ type of person. If you start something, then you may as well do your best. Love is no different; so she can’t hold back or calculate the risks. She truly believes that people in love are relatively happier, but that belief backfired in her experience with her first love, leaving her with nothing but scars.
Because of this, she gave up on her career as a diver. Several years have passed, and she lives a second life as a ‘couple manager’ (a couple matcher). One day, due to a major accident, she was assigned to manage a group of zero-match members with a 0% success rate. And there was Hoon Nam and his secrets; together, they embarked on the challenging journey of being a ‘couple manager’ for the zero-match members. Before she knows it, she starts to have feelings for Hoon Nam.
