Cheating is an unforgivable act that usually leads to a divorce. But our female protagonist of “Cheat on Me, If You Can” takes it to the next level. Kang Yeo Joo (Cho Yeo Jeong) is a mystery murder novelist who makes a deadpan public announcement that she will kill her husband if he ever cheats on her. She has a good sense of smell and is awfully observant. You’d think that she’d find out that her husband is cheating on her in a heartbeat. But her husband is no fool. He brings his “cheating kit” everywhere which contains the shampoo and soap that he uses at home, and fishes out a lint roller whenever a woman gets too intimate with him…

Episode 1

The episode opens to a rainy night with two people in a warehouse cooking instant noodles. Just then, the injured Han Woo Sung (Go Joon) slides open the door and enters the warehouse. Woo Sung moans in pain and asks them, “You guys do anything for money, right? I need you to kill someone.” Shocked, the two ask, “Who do you want dead?” Woo Sung tells them that it’s his wife.

The story moves back to 3 months ago where Woo Sung does a live interview about his work as a lawyer. As a divorce lawyer, he shares that he offers pro bono services for women who don’t have enough money to file for divorce. The lawyer then reveals how he met his wife, Yeo Joo. They met in a goshiwon (a cheap, small room typically for students). Yeo Joo comes in and asks Woo Sung if there’s a special room available, better if there’s a room where someone has died in it. After learning that there isn’t a room like that, Woo Sung lied and showed her to a room with spider webs everywhere and a noisy air ventilator because he fell for her appearance. Yeo Joo noticed the spider webs and noisy air ventilator, but showed satisfaction in the room. She spent the night typing away on her laptop in the room.

At the end of the live show, the host Baek Soo Jung (Hong Soo Hyun) unbuttons the top of her shirt and lets papers slip off her hands. While Woo Sung bends down to pick up the papers for her, Soo Jung asks if he will be free for lunch. In which, he replies that he has a trial later. he continues to invite him for a meal, but he refuses and runs away quickly.

Yeo Joo is all covered up with sunglasses and a grey hoodie, she picks up a can of beer and starts drinking at the convenience store. A part-timer in the store quietly sneaks a few pictures of her. As soon as one of Yeo Joo’s colleagues at the publishing company receives the pictures over text, they rush to carry her out and put her in their car. The part-timer Cha Soo Ho (Kim Young Dae) asks if he had done the right thing, her colleague reassures him, “If she didn’t show up at the book club reading today, they’d file a lawsuit.”

In the meeting room, Woo Sung is working on a divorce case with Lawyer Park defending the opposing side. He asks for settlement and pulls out a few pictures of her client cheating. Lawyer Park agrees to settle. She asks him to buy her dinner after that. He tells her, “Today is Tuesday, it’s grocery shopping day.” She smiles and nods.

At the grocery store, Woo Sung takes the elevator up and goes into one of the rooms, with Lawyer Park, scantily dressed, welcoming him.

Yeo Joo sits with no expression at the book club reading. One of the audience members raises her hand and asks, “If your husband cheats on you, what would you do?” She answers in a monotone manner, “I’ll do something from my novels. He’ll either commit suicide or die in an accident. Whatever it is, it’ll be a perfect crime.”

A group of people come in protesting. Her colleague explains to Soo Ho, who followed them, that her first novel criticized churches, so they have been making a scene whenever she has an event. One of them throws an egg at her. Soo Ho rushes to take the hit for her. He then carries her and runs out of the building.

Lawyer Park hugs Woo Sung while Woo Sung is buttoning up his shirt. He tells her that he wants to end this relationship, and that a reporter is following him around. Lawyer Park agrees coolly.

When Woo Sung gets home, Yeo Joo tells him that a guest is joining them for dinner. It turns out to be Baek Soo Jung. Woo Sung is flustered to see her and covertly tries to persuade her to leave whenever he gets the chance to. Soo Jung finally decides to leave under the condition that he continues to see her.

The next day, Woo Sung goes to Soo Jung’s place, but Soo Jung is mysteriously not there. He returns to his office, speaks to a political consultant who is interested in making him a congressman. Woo Sung comes back home to his printer printing out papers non-stop.

Episode 2

5 years ago, Woo Sung was in a restaurant telling a waiter to put an engagement ring in his girlfriend’s cake as he would be proposing to her. Yeo Joo arrived. The cake was served but she claimed that she disliked blueberry cakes. She stopped eating, but Woo Sung encouraged her to eat more. Yeo Joo revealed that the cake has a metallic taste and deduced that there was a ring in it. She told him to give the ring to the girl who gave him the pair of leather shoes he was wearing. Then, she broke up with him. He continued to pursue Yeo Joo relentlessly. He gave her a piece of paper that exhibited , ” A Disclaimer of Physical Rights” and told her it was notarized.

Woo Sung now looks at the pile of paper churned out by the printer that reads “A Disclaimer of Physical Rights” confused. He murmurs that he hasn’t been found yet because he’s been careful. Yeo Joo, hiding behind the wall, charges at him and stabs him with a knife prop. She’s disappointed that he isn’t shocked and explains that it’s about her novel.

Celebrity Baek Soo Jung is missing. Her manager goes to Detective Jang Seung Cheol (Lee Si Un) for help. He reveals that Soo Jung had told her manager to look for Detective Jang beforehand if anything were to happen to her.

The political consultant tells Woo Sung to conduct a lecture at a University. He runs into a young girl named Ko Mi Rae (Yeon Woo). After his lecture, she follows him to return his pen that he dropped, but he runs away.

Soo Ho applies to be Yeo Joo’s assistant and is hired. He goes to Yeo Joo’s apartment and meets her. Yeo Joo picks up scents of expensive shampoo and soap on him, and points out that he wears a limited edition watch. All these show that he is a very rich person. She tells him to go home because he’s been lying. He convinces her by saying that he was from the special forces and can help with her novel.

The detectives begin tracing Soo Jung’s whereabouts. Meanwhile , Yeo Joo’s helper is cleaning the fridge in the basement and finds some reddish stains on the floor. As she is about to open the fridge, Yeo Joo comes in to tell her that the broth is boiling.

Detective Jang and his partner An Se Jin (Kim Ye Won) decide to do a luminol test in Soo Jung’s apartment. They discover a  huge blood splatter on the wall.

What do you think of the recaps for episodes 1 & 2? It’s only been 2 episodes, but I am already hooked. I can sense a little bit of cheekiness and grim humor from this drama which are  my favorites! Leave your comments below and if you need me, I will be streaming episode 3 on KOCOWA with English subtitles!
