Sageuk or historical K-dramas are still one of the most popular genres today! What makes this genre more appealing is how it connects the main characters’ storylines to the happenings in the era they belong to—whether it’s Joseon, Silla, or even Goryeo. In these sageuk dramas (similar to other K-dramas), the main focus is often on the couple, usually the leads.
Historical K-drama couples have their own criteria for being considered the best. To stand out, 1) the male and female leads should have distinct personalities and stand independently; 2) they should come from a very interesting K-drama; 3) the actors and actresses must exude undeniable chemistry that everyone agrees upon. Let’s highlight these fan-favorite K-drama couples:
“My Dearest” Couple
Namkoong Min and Ahn Eun Jin as Lee Jang Hyun and Yoo Gil Chae from “My Dearest” are the most cherished couple nowadays since the drama ended last weekend. Their love story unfolds amid the backdrop of a war, portraying melodrama and hardship.
Lee Jang Hyun and Yoo Gil Chae didn’t have a grand or fancy first meeting, but they grew closer due to their intriguing personalities. Jang Hyun, though appearing self-centered, is actually someone willing to make sacrifices for his loved ones. Gil Chae, a strong female lead in K-dramas, is remarkably witty and capable of fighting for herself. Despite having limited time together and a delayed meeting, it doesn’t stop them from falling for each other. To me, they stand out as the best historical K-drama couple because their longing and love are profoundly conveyed through subtle glances and unspoken emotions.
“Joseon Attorney: A Morality” Couple
Woo Do Hwan and WJSN Bona in “Joseon Attorney: A Morality” are among the best couples in historical drama. Where else can you find an attorney in Joseon teaming up with a princess to help the poor using the law?
Kang Han Su and Princess Lee Yeon Ju have a fascinating dynamic, notably because it’s reversed here—the female lead is the one rescuing the male lead. What captivates me most is Han Su’s transformation; initially seeking revenge through the law, he becomes a compassionate person, aiding those unfamiliar with legalities to protect them from exploitation by the rich. Yeon Ju is equally remarkable, disguised as a maid while offering shelter to the less fortunate, all while being a princess. Also, their chemistry and banter are top-notch!
“The Forbidden Marriage” Couple
Park Ju Hyun and Kim Young Dae as Ye So Rang and Lee Heon in “The Forbidden Marriage” is not your ordinary K-drama couple but they are definitely one of the most memorable! Their connection is wild: a king who bans all marriages because he can’t move on from his late wife and a female lead posing as a shaman who speaks to the dead queen’s spirit!
Viewing a historical drama infused with comedy isn’t something we can see every year, making “The Forbidden Marriage” even more exciting to watch. What I admire most about this couple is how they resolve all misunderstandings, ensuring the king has moved on from his late wife. The female lead’s delightful sense of humor adds to her charm. She’s the perfect match for the king and the kingdom.
“Love in the Moonlight”
Hong Ra On and Lee Yeong from “Love In The Moonlight” represent an ideal historical K-drama couple. Their intertwined destinies unfold as Lee Yeong, a charismatic crown prince, encounters Hong Ra On, a spirited girl disguised as a eunuch in the palace.
What adds intrigue to this couple is the multitude of societal hurdles they face. The female lead initially posed as a man, a eunuch, to the crown prince, creating significant societal challenges. Their interactions are characterized by respect, understanding, genuine affection, and, of course, their constant but endearing banter.
“The Tale of Nokdu”
Kim So Hyun and Jang Dong Yoon in “The Tale of Nokdu” portray an intriguing K-drama couple in this series, which stands in stark contrast to the previously mentioned drama. It features a man disguised as a woman to investigate a mysterious incident. This male lead, pretending to be a woman, crosses paths with a courageous and skilled swordswoman.
Misunderstandings in K-dramas often bring about humorous situations, and it was truly enjoyable to witness their initial encounters and comedic moments in the all-women village. It’s immensely satisfying to observe their relationship evolving from amusing interactions to a profound and deep connection.
“Alchemy Of Souls” Couple
If we talk about the best historical drama couple, there’s no way we won’t mention Jang Uk and Naksu/Mu Deok of “Alchemy of Souls!” This series, among the best K-dramas from last year, showcases remarkable character and relationship development for the main leads.
Beginning as enemies and then evolving into a master and student duo, they relied on each other to achieve their goals. Over time, they found solace in one another and became each other’s pillars of strength. Witnessing their journey, from Jang Uk to becoming the best mage with Naksu’s assistance as the best assassin, is truly gratifying as it showcases their growth every step of the way!
