With K-Drama sci-fi, the future is now. Trading ghosts and ghouls for gadgets and gears, let’s take a look at K-Drama sci-fi with a special focus on robots!

The Vibe: Tech all the way up to 10

Sci-fi K-Dramas are all about what the brains of Korea can build, even if perhaps they shouldn’t have gone there. It is clean, sleek, and full of AI power, even before AI was the buzzword it is now.

Futuristic Tropes to Spot:
  • The “Robot in Disguise”: Sometimes, the android is pretending to be human—or the human is pretending to be a robot! Get ready for secret identities and accidental confessions.
  • The Existential Message: What does it mean to be human? These shows have that question laced all over them.
  • Batteries Not Included: Either the batteries are about to conk out or someone discovers there are no batteries, le gasp! This is always a fun one.

Sci Fi Shows with K-Drama Robots

These four shows represent the different ways K-Dramas handle artificial or enhanced beings:

The Fake Robot
  • I Am Not a Robot: A classic rom-com with hidden identities and misunderstandings. It uses the robot trope in a meta way to explore human isolation and trauma, but with gags and “did the robot just fart” goofs.

The Real Robot
  • Are You Human Too?: This is for AI drama girlies. It features an android who often shows more human qualities than the people around him. Plus, it looks high-budget and is visually stunning.

The Domestic Cyborg
  • Borg Mom: A satirical take on modern parenting where a robot mother must infiltrate the cutthroat world of elite elementary school parents. If you like campy, this is the one for you.

The Enhanced Human
  • Where Stars Land:  This mysterious lead isn’t a robot, but he is enhanced in a way that gives him superhuman strength, which he tries to hide while working at Incheon Airport.

Sci-fi with robots is fun and futuristic in a way that is all about how to live in a world with advanced science and how that advanced science reveals or reduces our humanity. But with plenty of fun along the way.

And now that you have these four dramas to check out, it’s time to plug in (see what we did there) and watch them on KOCOWA+.
