In honor of our newly released K-Drama “Phantom Lawyer”, it’s time to pivot our K-Drama Starter Pack to a genre that offers a different kind of heart-pumping experience. Say hello to Horror Comedies!
Think of Horror Comedies as the “margarita” of the K-Drama world: they’re a little bit salty, a little bit sweet, and definitely pack a punch. While traditional horror wants you to lose sleep, these shows want you to lose your breath as you alternate between gasps and giggles. It’s a great genre for “scaredy-cats” who want the thrill without the nightmares. *raises hand*
The Vibe: Spirits with Sass
In most genres, ghosts are a life-ending problem because they plan on ending your life. In a K-Drama horror comedy, ghosts are usually an annoyance. The magic happens in the juxtaposition, ala ancient vengeful spirits being told to “get in line” by a grumpy protagonist. Sure, they might kill you as well, but it’s the comedy part that reigns supreme.
Spooky Tropes to Spot:
- The “Touch-Activated” Safe Zone: Usually, the leads have a physical connection that acts as a ghost-repellent. It’s the ultimate excuse for skinship—”I’m not holding your hand because I like you; I’m doing it so that lady with the decapitated head disappears.”
- The Grumpy Exorcist: Professional ghost-hunters in K-Dramas are rarely heroic monks. They are usually tired cynics who are highly motivated by money.
- The “Ghost of the Week”: Get used to a new haunt every week with a spirit whose “unfinished business” usually teaches the leads a lesson or two.
- The Ghost Phone: Expect people talking to thin air while onlookers judge them silently. Maybe they can play it off like they’re on their Bluetooth, usually not.
Usually, the horror is comedy-based, but K-Dramas always bring in the feels as well, so you might expect some heartwarming moments along with the horror and comedy of it all.
The Horror-Comedy K-Drama Watchlist
The Romantic Blueprint

- Master’s Sun: Start here because this show is so fun. A timid woman sees terrifying ghosts until one day, when she touches a cold-hearted billionaire and wants to spend every moment with him from then on out. This drama may have invented the “protective skinship” trope, which has become a staple in the horror comedy K-Drama space.
The Chic & Sharp Exorcist
- Sell Your Haunted House: A high-end realtor is also an exorcist who clears out cheap haunted buildings so they can be sold at market value. She’s fierce, fashionable, and she has zero patience when she has to team up with a fake exorcist grifter who turns out to have a real gift for housing spirits in his body. In this show, the banter is as sharp as her exorcism needles.
The “How to be Human” Handbook

- Zombie Detective: This zombie is not of the Train to Busan variety. He is clueless and charming and just wants to solve the case. After waking up in a dump, our undead hero has to use makeup and human training to pass as a living private investigator. It’s a hilarious show with plenty of funny moments that will give you a good chuckle while also rooting for the zombie to succeed.
The Broke-Student Struggle
- Show Me the Ghost: This entry is for anyone who has ever lived in a questionable apartment because the rent was too good to be true. Two best friends realize their dream rental is haunted, but since they’re too broke to move, they decide to stay and try and DIY an exorcism. It’s a quirky meta look at how being broke and homeless is scarier than being haunted.
The Sassy Ghost with a Secret

- Tale of Arang: Set in the Joseon era, this supernatural mystery follows a feisty ghost, Arang, who can’t rest until she uncovers the truth behind her untimely death. Teaming up with a skeptical magistrate who can see spirits (and really prefers to ignore their presence so they don’t find that out and bother him about it). The duo navigates a series of eerie, often hilarious, misadventures to find out the secret behind Arang’s death.
