Some of my favorite stories are origin stories: Kim Shin in “Goblin,” Natasha Romanoff in “Black Widow,” and Han Se Joo, Jun Seol, and Yoo Jin Oh in “Chicago Typewriter.” I’m sure you can think of your own favorites! I love origin stories, because they pull me in and help me get to know the characters in question better.
With that in mind, I’d love to introduce you to my KOCOWA origin story. It’s pretty closely tied to my K-drama origin story, so I’ll start there.
Once upon a time, on a social media platform that shall remain nameless, a streaming service that shall ALSO remain nameless advertised their services with a trailer for the drama “Goblin.” I was drawn in by the story of a magical creature who seemed to be getting two people to fall in love and the girl with him who was cheering on his efforts. But there was a twist — the people the magical being had manipulated were NOT nice people, and the magical creature was actually saving other people from their awfulness. I was completely drawn in by this short segment and absolutely had to know more.
After watching the entire drama twice, I felt a strong pull to explore this new world of storytelling. What can I say? Gong Yoo as Kim Shin was very compelling, and I needed more. I had never even thought about Korean television until that fateful day, so I had no idea what I was missing. But as I did some digging and connecting with other K-drama fans, I came across great friends who shared my newfound love of Korean dramas and pulled me into the drama blogging world.
A few months later, these friends and I were recapping “While You Were Sleeping,” which is a fantastic drama starring Bae Suzy and Lee Jong Suk and Jung Hae In, and if you haven’t watched it, what have you been doing with your life? Anyway, the site I usually used was NOT subbing the drama fast enough, and it was my turn to recap the episode. I was panicking, but then I remembered KOCOWA. KOCOWA had just debuted earlier in the year, and I was curious to see if they had the newest “While You Were Sleeping” episode subbed already.
To my great relief, it WAS subbed! The quality of the subtitles delighted me, so I was immediately hooked. Not only that, but I was able to get my weekly dose of “While You Were Sleeping” almost as soon as it was available. I continued on to watch other great dramas on KOCOWA, like “I Am Not a Robot,” and I was continually impressed with how wonderful the subtitles were and how FAST the dramas were subbed! Four years later, and I’m still here, happy to have KOCOWA dramas on my screen nearly every day.
