Are you as sad as we are? Superstar couple Song Joong-Ki and Song Hye-Kyo have announced their plans to divorce.

The stars met and fell in love on the set of “Descendants of The Sun,” the hit series that resonated not only with Koreans, but also with international viewers. The finale hit a peak rating of 42% in Seoul, according to AGB Nielsen. At that time, it was the most popular week-night K-Drama since 2012’s “The Moon Embracing the Sun.”

Here’s a brief timeline of their life together:

May 28, 2015: Just days after his real-life military discharge, Song Joong-Ki attends a script reading for “Descendants of the Sun.” He will play the captain of the South Korean Special Forces unit opposite Song Hye-Kyo, who will portray a doctor.

September 28 to December 30, 2015: The couple spends time together on various locations, including Greece, to film the series.

February 24, 2016: “Descendants of the Sun” premieres on KBS2 in South Korea to a big buzz.

June 17, 2016: Hye-Kyo appears on stage with Joong-Ki at his fan meeting in China. She later hints at their relationship with the hashtag #SongSongCouple. Even though they’ve been spotted together at various locations, they continue to deny they are anything more than good friends.

July 5, 2017: Until this day, they had denied that they were in a relationship. But Song and Song delight fans by announcing their engagement.

October 31, 2017: The glamorous couple celebrate their marriage at Seoul’s Hotel Shilla. Among their celebrity guests in attendance are So Ji-Sub, Park Bo-Gum, Park Hyung-Sik, Joong-Ki’s best friend Lee Kwang-Soo and their DOTS co-star Kim Ji-Won.

Early 2019: Divorce rumors circulate, but that’s common for all celebrity couples.

June 26, 2019: Song Joong-Ki files divorce papers. Song Hye-Kyo confirms that they have agreed to separate.

As with all high-profile cases, rumors are spreading as to why the glamorous couple has decided to go their separate ways. It’s best not to speculate and let the actors speak for themselves.

Joong-Ki released his statement first:

Hello. This is Song Joong-Ki. First, I’d like to apologize for delivering this unfortunate news to the many fans who love and care for me. I have begun the process of filing for divorce from Song Hye-Kyo. Rather than denouncing one another and arguing over who is to blame, I hope that the divorce process can be wrapped up amicably. I ask for your understanding in regards to the fact that it is difficult to discuss the details of my personal life, and I will recover from my current wounds and do my utmost as an actor to repay you through great productions in the future. Thank you.

Shortly afterwards, United Artists Agency, which represents Song Hye-Kyo, released their statement:

We find it unfortunate that we are greeting you with unhappy news. After careful consideration, actress Song Hye-Kyo and her husband are taking the first steps toward a divorce. The reason is differences in personality and because the two were unable to overcome their differences, they were forced to come to this decision. We respectfully ask for your understanding in regards to the fact that we cannot confirm any further details out of respect for the two actors’ personal lives. Additionally, we urge you to refrain from making scandalous posts and speculative comments.

While their real-life romance is over, #SongSongCouple will always live on in “Descendants of The Sun.” Fans can re-live the romance between Captain Yoo Shi-Jin and Dr. Kang Mo-Yeon on KOCOWA.

We wish nothing but happiness for these talented actors. What are your favorite Song Joong-Ki and Song Hye-Kyo K-dramas (besides “Descendants of The Sun“)? Let us know in the comments below!
