No matter how intense and exciting well-written historical dramas are, they still won’t seem attractive to some drama watchers.

Perhaps it’s due to some of the reasons below,

  • Too long (“Jewel in the Crown” with 60 episodes.)
  • Have complicated political fight scenes that hurt the brain (“The Rebel.”)
  • The main characters are always fighting for the throne, making you imagine you’d eat all the good food in the palace and quit after, if you were one of them (“Haechi.“)
  • Have little to no fluffy romantic scenes (“The Great Queen Seondeok.”)

But here, we have a few dramas that are just like modern romcom dramas and are more importantly, enjoyable to watch.

Splash Splash Love (2015)

Episodes: 2.

THE STORY: Jang Dan-Bi (Kim Seul-Gi) is a senior high school student who wants an escape from her life. On a rainy day, she jumps into a puddle and finds herself traveling back in time to the Joseon period. She meets the king, Lee Do (Yoon Doo-Joon), and ends up serving him as his eunuch.

In just 2 episodes, the leads fall in love rather quickly and they have plenty of cute and heart-fluttering scenes together. This would quench one’s thirst for romance scenes quickly and effectively.

Similar modern romcom: “Princess Hours” with a playful teenage female lead who likes using trendy phrases and the male lead’s life brightening up because of them.

Historical drama with a similar plot: “The Great Doctor” where the female lead travels to the past to surprise and educate people from the past using her knowledge from the modern world.

Love in the Moonlight (2016)

Episodes: 18.

THE STORY: Similar to “Splash Splash Love,” the female lead Hong Ra-On (Kim Yoo-Jung) disguises herself as a man reluctantly and is sent to the palace as a eunuch.

Crown Prince Lee Yeong (Park Bo-Gum) slowly falls for his eunuch, Ra-On, even before learning that she is a girl. He also shows his adorable side by being all smitten whenever he sees Ra-On smiling. His sweet smiles are capable of tugging anyone’s heartstrings!

Similar modern romcoms: “You’re Beautiful” and “To The Beautiful You” where the female leads disguise themselves as boys, and the guys fall for them before learning they are females.

Historical drama with a similar plot: “The Scholar Who Walks the Night” with its female lead disguising herself as a boy.

The King In Love (2017)

Episodes: 40 (30 mins each.)

THE STORY: Crown Prince Wang Won (Im Si-Wan) and his best friend Wang Rin (Hong Jong-Hyun) both fall in love with a young lady named Eun San (Im Yoon-Ah).

The romantic scenes in here are only mildly satisfying because San doesn’t pick one guy she loves right away. In fact, she has a hard time choosing the guy she likes. This drama highlights the subtle love that can be seen within friendships.

Similar modern romcoms: “Cheer Up!” with best friends falling for the same girl, and “Jealousy Incarnate” where the female lead loves both men equally, and the two happen to be best friends.

Historical drama with a similar plot: “Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth” with that heavy dose of bromance that won’t disappoint.

Queen For Seven Days (2017)

Episodes: 20.

THE STORY: A tragic love story between King Jungjong (Yeon Woo-Jin) and Queen Dangyeong (Park Min-Young) who was deposed within 7 days after becoming a queen. Her family was warned of misfortunes happening if she gets involved with the royal family by a prophecy, but they fail to keep her away from them.

Misfortunes happen whenever they meet, proving how accurate the prophecy is time and again, but the two don’t give up their love for that. The lovely couple sees that in another perspective–it’s only because they have each other that they could still stay alive.

And that is only one of the many romantic dialogues they share without even blinking an eye. It’s definitely a drama that makes viewers hearts’ throb with its effortlessly sweet lines.

Similar modern romcom: “Lucky Romance” where the female lead is predicted to be unlucky all her life.

Historical drama with a similar plot: “Moon Embracing the Sun” with a shaman predicting the tragic life of the female lead once she enters the palace.
